How does a company providing irrigation solutions help reduce world hunger?

Valmont Industries is a global leader in creating vital infrastructure and advancing agricultural productivity. With more than 600 million people worldwide projected to face hunger in 20301, Valmont’s irrigation business will help mitigate this number by creating products that save water, increase food security in vulnerable climates, and increase farm productivity. These impact not just the efficiency of agricultural production in developed markets but crucially, also increase resilience and improving production profiles in developing nations.

Its equipment is not just used to help production of key US staples (soy/corn) but also has applications in increasing efficiency of globally grown crops. This is the case in rice production, which they make more efficiently from a water use perspective and safer due to reduced arsenic content, when compared to flooded rice. In total they help save 4 trillion gallons of water annually.

This helps tackle Sustainable Development Target 2.42 which by 2030, looks to ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that:

  • Increase productivity and production
  • Help maintain ecosystems
  • Strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters
  • Progressively improve land and soil quality.

Risk warnings - Investors should also be aware of the following risk factors which may be applicable to the strategy shown in this document.

  • Investing in foreign markets introduces a risk where adverse movements in currency exchange rates could result in a decrease in the value of your investment.
  • This strategy may hold a limited number of investments. If one of these investments falls in value this can have a greater impact on the strategy’s value than if it held a larger number of investments.
  • Smaller companies may be riskier and their shares may be less liquid than larger companies, meaning that their share price may be more volatile.
  • Emerging markets or less developed countries may face more political, economic or structural challenges than developed countries. Accordingly, investment in emerging markets is generally characterised by higher levels of risk than investment in fully developed markets.
  • The strategy may invest in derivatives, Index futures and FX forwards to obtain, increase or reduce exposure to underlying assets. The use of derivatives may result in greater fluctuations of returns due to the value of the derivative not moving in line with the underlying asset. Certain types of derivatives can be difficult to purchase or sell in certain market conditions.
  • The integration of sustainability risks in the investment decision process may have the effect of excluding profitable investments from the investment universe of the strategy and may also cause the strategy to sell investments that will continue to perform well.
